Writing and reading

From 6 years old bilingual level

Our reading and writing classes are designed for bilingual or multilingual children who already understand and use spoken Spanish and are ready to explore written language.

We work on literacy in an active, hands-on, and child-centred way, respecting each child's individual pace. Through play, phonological awareness, shared reading, guided writing, and creative activities, students progressively develop the skills needed to read and write with confidence and understanding.

Level 1 · Early readers

This level is designed for children who are beginning their journey into reading and writing in Spanish.

The main goal is to establish the connection between the sounds of the language and the letters that represent them. Children gradually discover the Spanish writing system while developing phonological awareness, learning to recognise letters, and beginning to read and write their first words.

At this level we work on:

  • Sound discrimination and manipulation.

  • Rhymes, word games, and phonological awareness.

  • The association between phonemes and graphemes.

  • The formation of syllables and simple words.

  • First guided reading and writing experiences.

  • Understanding that spoken language can be written and written language can be read.

All of this is done through playful activities, hands-on materials, and tasks adapted to each child's individual pace.

Level 2 · Developing readers

Once the foundations of reading have been established, children move towards more fluent reading and greater writing independence.

At this stage, the complexity of words and structures gradually increases, strengthening reading accuracy and writing skills. Students begin to read longer texts, understand different text types, and produce increasingly developed pieces of writing.

At this level we work on:

  • Fluent reading of words and sentences.

  • Complex syllables and common spelling patterns.

  • Reading comprehension.

  • Basic Spanish spelling.

  • Sentence building.

  • Guided writing of short texts.

  • Vocabulary and grammar expansion.

The aim is for children to gain confidence as readers and writers, using written Spanish as a real tool for communication.

Level 3 · Autonomous readers and writers

This level is aimed at children who already read with some fluency and are ready to deepen their comprehension, written expression, and accurate use of language.

Students work with texts from different genres and develop strategies that allow them to understand, analyse, and produce increasingly complex and personal texts.

At this level we work on:

  • Reading comprehension and critical reading.

  • Vocabulary expansion.

  • Spanish grammar and spelling.

  • Planning and writing texts.

  • Different literary genres and text types.

  • Creative writing.

  • Revising and improving their own texts.

The final goal is for children to use reading and writing with confidence, independence, and engagement, while strengthening their connection to the Spanish language and Spanish-speaking cultures.

Course Information

Classes are organised in blocks of 8 sessions, which usually take place over a period of approximately 3 to 4 months, taking school holidays and public holidays into account.

Progress Monitoring and Assessment

At the end of each period, we share feedback with families on their child's language development and the progress observed in class.

We carry out two formal assessments each year:

  • At the end of the cycle before the Christmas holidays.

  • At the end of the cycle before the summer holidays.

Children in the Preschool group and above also have a personal portfolio where their classwork and activities are collected. At the end of each term, they can take it home to share their achievements and progress with their families.

Bookshop and Library

At the entrance of the academy, you will find our bookshop and library. We offer a carefully selected collection of Spanish-language children's books that support language development, essential learning skills, values, and a love of reading.

If you purchase a book, please include the title in the MobilePay payment reference (103972).

Community Library

We also run a community library. Families are welcome to borrow Spanish-language books and to donate books they no longer use.

Library books can be found in the drawers of the bench at the entrance and are easy to identify. Please remember to record any borrowed books on the list provided on the table.

A Few Reminders

  • Please supervise your children while they are in the entrance area.

  • If your children would like to read while waiting, they are welcome to use the books available in the library drawers.

  • We kindly ask that children do not handle or damage books that are for sale in the bookshop.
